Portable Speakers: Why You Need One

Music - it's everywhere, on our iPhones, iPods, MP3 players, smartphones, and laptop computers. Most of us are carrying these devices around with us every day, in our bags, purses, and pockets. Despite the fact that music seems to be all around us, it has turned into a solitary experience with the use of headphones. Whether you prefer to use the white Apple ear buds, that most seem to be using, or ear muff type that let you know you are in the presence of a music connoisseur, everyone seems to own a pair of either, or both. While headphones are great for listening to music while you are by yourself, or in a place that isn't conducive to listening to music out-loud, they do not provide the social experience that can be created with the use of a portable speaker.

In the 1980s, and early 1990s people shared their music with boom boxes or ghetto blasters (I should know, I had one myself). These boom boxes often ran on six to eight D sized traditional batteries, when a plug outlet was not available, and battery life not exactly enduring. They were large, had sharp corners, shaped like a box and weren't exactly designed to be traveled around with. Well it seems these boom boxes or ghetto blasters are making a comeback in the form of "new school" portable speakers. Today's modern portable speakers are much sleeker in their design, much smaller in size, contain built in re-chargeable batteries that seem to last forever, and are compatible with just about every type of portable MP3 music device, via their 3.5mm audio output jacks.

There are a large number of companies that are making waterproof portable speakers for iPods, iPhones, MP3 players, and laptop computers, the list includes, iHome, XMI, Creative, Altec Lansing, Sony, Bose, and many others. Portable speakers are great when you want to share your music with a group of people, or if you prefer the freedom of listening to your music out-loud by yourself without being confined to a pair of headphones with a cord. Today's models come in a variety of sizes; larger versions can be purchased to achieve a similar listening experience to that of a home stereo system, while small to extra small models can easily be totted around in your pocket, purse or bag and also provide a high quality listening experience.

Next time you are playing volleyball, basketball, Frisbee, or having a BBQ at the park, perhaps a portable speaker would be a great idea to listen to that music you and everyone else seems to have in their pocket.

I am looking for my next big adventure. There are still many places I want to visit and even more to which I want to return. The camera is charged up and my backpack is packed; drop me a line if you know where I should go next.
